Therapeutic Nature-Based Practice for Schools
Supporting emotional wellbeing, connection and participation in learning
Develop the skills and confidence to offer thoughtful, nature-based support for children experiencing emotional distress or difficulties engaging with school, including emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA).
This Nature-Based Learning Hub programme brings together behavioural science, therapeutic principles and practical outdoor learning. It helps school staff understand barriers to participation, build trusted relationships and create accessible experiences shaped around each child’s needs.
Who is it for?
Teaching assistants, learning mentors, pastoral staff, SENCOs and teachers who support children’s emotional wellbeing and engagement with education.
Two pathways for support
On school grounds
Create a familiar outdoor base where a trusted adult supports participation in nature-based activities and individually agreed transitions into learning.
Off-site with school reconnection
Plan accessible nature-based support away from school, with consistent relationships and a carefully coordinated connection back to school. Staff learn how to work with families and delivery partners to agree manageable next steps.
Both pathways include changes to the school environment and learning provision, guided by the child’s perspective.
Putting learning into practice
Through practical activities, case discussions and supported planning, participants develop a flexible six-session programme for their setting. Sessions can be repeated or adapted, with progression based on individual needs rather than a fixed timetable.
The training supports educational and pastoral practice. It does not qualify participants as therapists or replace specialist assessment and treatment.
