Outdoor practical skills for group leaders

Not every group or setting needs the full Forest School approach. For many practitioners, what matters most is confidence in practical outdoor skills that can be used immediately with children, young people, and community groups.

That is why we are excited to announce the launch of our new Level 2 Bushcraft Skills qualification for group leaders, a practical, accessible programme designed for those who want to build competence in outdoor living skills without committing to full Forest School training.

Accredited by ITC First, the qualification has been developed to provide learners with fundamental bushcraft knowledge and practical skills for use in real outdoor environments.

The course focuses on core outdoor competencies, including:

  • Safe use of bushcraft tools
  • Shelter building
  • Fire lighting and campfire management
  • Woodland materials and tree identification
  • Outdoor safety and environmental awareness

The qualification is structured around practical application and hands-on learning, making it ideal for youth workers, scout and guide leaders, outdoor educators, wellbeing practitioners, and school staff looking to expand their outdoor provision.

The qualification also supports progression into further bushcraft and outdoor learning training pathways.

The Level 2 Award in Bushcraft Skills has been developed with support from the Institute for Outdoor Learning Bushcraft Professional Practice Group and recognised bushcraft training providers. Learners complete a portfolio of evidence alongside practical assessments, ensuring that skills are embedded through experience and reflection.

As outdoor learning continues to grow across schools, alternative provision, therapeutic settings, and community projects, there is increasing demand for staff and volunteers who feel capable outdoors but may not require the full pedagogical framework of Forest School.

This qualification bridges that gap.

Whether you want to safely introduce campfire cooking, teach shelter building, support nature connection sessions, or simply gain greater confidence leading groups outdoors, this programme offers a strong practical foundation.

Launching soon, the ITC-accredited Level 2 Award in Bushcraft Skills will provide an opportunity for group leaders to gain recognised training while developing practical, transferable outdoor skills that can enhance provision across a wide range of settings.

Further details, course dates, and booking information will be announced shortly.
